Digitization of a Photo


If a photo is captured digitally, the digital camera must display the image with a limited character set. To do this, the camera captures the color value at several sampling points. The finer the grid of these sampling points, the closer the digital image is to the original.


The following illustration is an example of how a digital photo is created by sampling reality. By changing the granularity of the sampling (temporal discretization), we adjust the number of sampling points per row or column. We can also determine the number of perceived colour values (value discretization).
