• L4: Data

In this module, you will learn what data and data sets are and how to work with a data set.

We live in a digital world that has an abundance of data. The increasing adoption of technology in various sectors, such as social, business, economic, educational and governmental environments, has enabled massive data generation. For example, data is generated daily on the internet (e.g. social media data, e-commerce data), in the workplace (e.g. production data, sales data, financial data), in research centers (e.g. biological data, health data, astronomical data) and in smart cities (e.g. location data or complex multimedia data, e.g. surveillance videos). This availability of data is one of the main reasons for the increasing application and success of machine learning (ML) technology in various fields such as health, biology and journalism. In the next module, you will learn more about machine learning and the role of data in it. But first, you will learn more about data in this module.

In this module, you will learn:

    • what is meant by “data” and “big data.”
    • how to analyze, visualize, and appropriately interpret data using examples.
    • the role data plays in the field of artificial intelligence.
    • where training data for AI models comes from.
    • what ethical questions arise in the collection of data for AI models.
    • how important data and data analysis are for your own fields of expertise.

We strongly recommend that you work through Module 04 on a computer in order to make optimum use of the learning resources.
